The Colorado Supreme Court's Board of Bar Examiners presides over one of the less transparent bar exams in the country. They release essay questions, discussions and score sheets from only the last couple of exams.

The Colorado Bar exam, a two-day exam, consists of  

  • two 90-minute Colorado Performance Test questions, weighted 20%; and
  • nine 25-minute Colorado essay questions, weighted 30%.

The successful applicant must achieve a combined scaled score of 276 out of 400 points.  Applicants also must pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) within 2 years before taking the bar exam with a scaled score of 85.

Similar to the MPT, the Colorado Performance Test tests skills commonly used by competent practicing lawyers, including

  • legal analysis
  • fact analysis
  • awareness of professional responsibility
  • problem solving  
  • research skills
  • writing skills.

The following subjects may be tested on the Colorado bar exam:

  • business organizations 
  • civil procedure (Colorado)
  • commercial transactions, including UCC Articles 1 (general provisions), 2 (sales), 3 (negotiable instruments), 9 (secured transactions)
  • constitutional law
  • contracts, including UCC Article 2 sales 
  • criminal law and procedure 
  • evidence 
  • family law (Colorado)
  • public law, including administrative and constitutional law
  • real property, including real estate finance 
  • torts
  • wills, estates, and trusts.
